Sheep Gut Strings On a 350 Year Old Viola?! Brian's vintage sound!
SOUNDPOST - A 17th century viola with gut strings!
I had this July 2021 discussion with violist Brian Che-Yen Chen about his instrument at the Bowdoin International Music Festival where we were both on the faculty and also (after about 20 years!) had the chance to perform together. Watch to the end of the video to hear this fabulous violist and instrument.
Circa 1680, Enrico Cattenar built this viola in Turin, Italy and Brian prefers using gut strings with it for a really special viola sound that he loves.
Currently viola faculty at UCLA and violist of the Formosa Quartet, Brian was the 2003 First Prize Winner of the Primrose Competition and former principal violist of the San Diego Symphony.
