Hong Kong police battle protesters, make mass arrests in violent weekend before China's National Day

Pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong escalated over the weekend with some of the most violent clashes since demonstrations kicked off in June, and the city is bracing for a day of celebration and chaos on October 1st, the founding of Communist China.

Hong Kong police arrested dozens of protesters near government headquarters on Sunday following a series of running battles.

Police fired water cannon, rubber bullets and several rounds of tear gas at protesters who responded by throwing petrol bombs and bricks in some of the most widespread violence in Hong Kong since the beginning of anti-government unrest.

More protests are planned in the run-up to China's Oct. 1 National Day, marking the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic.
