Battleground PolyU

Tensions in the ongoing protests in Hong Kong reached its peak in the middle of November 2019 after a protester was shot by a traffic policeman. Students occupied university campuses across the city and blocked key highways. After a fierce battle at the Chinese University, attention turned to the blockade at Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) where students had closed off the Cross Harbour Tunnel leading to it.

This immersive 360 video takes you through five days in and around PolyU. On November 15, visual journalist DJ Clark first arrived at PolyU as students were occupying the campus. On the evening of the 16th , police attempted to clear the streets around the university. The conflict lasted into the night of the 17th. A police cordon was put around the campus, trapping protesters inside.

On November 18, thousands of protesters from around the city tried to break the cordon from the outside to allow those trapped inside PolyU to escape. The street fights lasted into the night, but the police cordon stayed intact.
By November 19, most protesters held up on campus surrendered to the police.
