Oil Catch Can Installation & Benefits - Toyota 2.2L 5SFE engine
This video will show you how I installed a Catch Can in my 1999 Toyota Camry I4 5SFE engine with 270,000 miles. If your car's been burning more oil than usual and notice engine knock during engine load, it could be excessive blow by gases going into your intake manifold. A common aftermarket product installed by performance tuners is called an Oil Catch Can or simply a Catch Can. It works by separating the oil vapors from the gas before it's channeled back into the intake. The absence of oil will reduce carbon build up on the piston dome, intake valves and throttle body throttle plate. The engine will run smoother with more consistent power since the oil vapors will not contaminant the incoming air/fuel mixture that can reduce the fuel's octane in the combustion chamber.
At every oil change, the can should be removed to empty the accumulated oil.
6/23/2020 - My response to a subscriber on the parts used to put this catch can in my car:
" In the text description of this video, I listed a catch can that looks identical to the one I purchased on Amazon. The one I bought was the last one sold by the vendor. With respect to hoses, I went to my local auto parts vendor to find something that closely matched the kit's output ports. The L shaped bracket was a piece of flat steel I purchased from the hardware section of HomeDepot. I bent it in a vice and drilled two holes for chassis mounting. I used one sheet metal screw and a rivet to hold the bracket onto the car's chassis. The hose clamps and zip ties were just standard auto hardware I had in stock. The stainless steel mesh came from a my wife's pot scrubber which I cut a piece off and screwed into the can's baffle. So far the catch can has been working wonderfully. It is accumulating blow by gas oil, no more engine knock under load and the idle is smoother."
