Staying Hydrated in the Winter

Kristi Shive, Warren County Extension Agent for Family and Consumer Sciences visits with Sarah Drysdale, Ballard County Extension Agent for Family and Consumer Sciences about staying hydrated. We talked back in the summer about the importance of staying hydrated during the hot months of summer. But it is very important to stay hydrated even in the winter. It is recommended that we are to drink between 8 to 12, 8 fl. Oz. cups of water a day. We still sweat during the winter months, and we can become dehydrated. We run the risk of becoming dehydrated. This is when we have a low intake of fluids, and it is very common to become dehydrated. Symptoms of dehydration include: difficulty swallowing, dry mouth due to low saliva production, headaches, fatigue, loss of appetite, dry eyes or even
difficulty focusing, muscle cramps, and even kidney issues (most serve cases).
Just drinking plain water can get old after a while there are ways to change up your water. While we might not want to have a cold glass of water in the winter we can substitute it for a warmer beverage like herbal tea, warmed low-fat milk, and even a cup of coffee. We just want to be careful not to drink too many calories from those warm beverages. We can also infuse our water with lemons, limes, strawberries, blueberries, or even oranges into your water to give added flavor.
