Doctorate / PhD Authorship Credit Disputes

The key with thinking about PhD authorship is to always think about how to be fair. However, not everyone is going to be fair to you. How do you deal with PhD authorship disputes? I believe that authorship disputes occur mostly because of uncertainty over someone’s actions and what they say they are going to do.

Here are some lessons that I learnt in academia that might be important for you to consider.

1. It is extremely easy for people take credit for a particular idea. Most people are going to allow you to do the work.

2. Try to be explicit with all of your contracts when you work with people. Most people are not going to do a lot of work on your project, so just assume that you are going to do most of it.

3. Start of with small chores, and work up to larger ones. You want to protect yourself and your efforts as a PhD student. So, start out with small tasks and work up to larger ones when deciding to work with other people.

4. Look around at their publishing style or ask other people what it is like to work with those people. Seek people that seek the truth.

5. Do not let relationships go on that should be terminated rather quickly. You can usually get a sense for someone quite quickly, and if you have bad feelings, you should stop the relationship.
