Should You Transfer Your PhD To Another University?

Transferring PhD programs is common but few people openly talk about changing PhD programs. There are several reasons why people change or transfer PhD programs:

1. PhD candidates learnt about what they like to do.
2. PhD students did not get a long with some aspect of their current program.
3. PhD students did not perform well with their current program, and switch to other programs.

The problem that you have when you switch PhD programs is to communicate that you are doing so to the outside world because of point one. Outside audiences might infer that you are some how difficult to get along with or that you are not good enough for their program.

The key is to come up with an excellent rationale to show others that you are interested in the new program. Read up on the program, and try to craft a paper that fits the interests of the new program. Your goal is to communicate that the new area fits what you are interested in.

Some other tips:

1. Switch to the new program sooner rather than later. If you do not like the material that you are learning, it does not get better.
2. Try to not communicate the switch is due to the difficultly of the program or due to your distaste for the material. All PhD programs are difficult. They are meant to be. Avoid switching because of the difficultly - it is not going to be easier in their other area.
3. Look at the long-run. Most roles change with time in any field. What are the people in your field doing 10 years from now? Is this something that you want to be doing?
4. Build your own PhD program. If the ideal program does not exist, build it yourself. Nothing stops you from exploring in graduate school, or doing visiting positions at other schools.
5. The current program is likely going to persuade you from leaving the program - they have invested in you and want to see that you are going to make their program look good.

David Maslach is a research professor of entrepreneurship, innovation, and business strategy, I discuss topics, such as behavioral science, strategy, innovation, and entrepreneurship, and apply these to my new peer proofreading and editing platform. Topics include the sharing economy, altruism, investing in technology, starting a business, and bounded rationality. My favorite videos pertain to incentives, goal setting, and learning from failure to drive behaviors such as weight loss, stopping telemarketers, creating novel technologies, and creating new movements.

https://r3ciprocity.com: Peer proofreading and editing platform

A new platform where you can earn credits by editing other people's documents. Use these credits to have your own work edited. If you do a good enough job, you can convert these credits to money.

The goal of the platform is to get people to 'pay it forward' and help other people out by creating incentives for people to give back.
