Global National: Sept. 5, 2021 | March held in Ottawa for Canadians detained in China for 1,000 days
Family, friends, and supporters marched through the streets of Ottawa in solidarity of Michael Spavor and Michael Kovrig, who are surpassing 1,000 days of being detained in China. The campaign to bring them home has gone nowhere, but as Mike Armstrong explains, loved ones are still holding out hope for a reunion.
In Canada's federal election campaign, Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau is facing questions about Raj Saini, who was the party's candidate in Kitchener Centre before leaving the election race due to allegations of misconduct. As Abigail Bimman reports, Trudeau did offer up one new tidbit about what prompted Saini's departure, but didn't say much else.
After being dogged by questions about his vague stance on gun control, Conservative Leader Erin O'Toole now says he will uphold the Liberals' ban on 'assault-style' weapons if he's elected. His party's platform pledged to repeal it. Mike Le Couteur explains what may be behind O'Toole's clarification.
In Ottawa, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh says Canada needs a national COVID-19 vaccine passport, instead of different provinces using different systems. As Matthew Bingley explains, Singh is also seeking a rare moment of political unity from the competition to spread the message about vaccines.
The cleanup continues in the northeastern United States, after devastating flash flooding from remnants of Hurricane Ida killed dozens of people. As Jennifer Johnson reports, lawmakers want action to prevent a similar disaster in the future.
Meanwhile, as Afghans try to escape the Taliban's wrath, the European Union is bracing itself for a potential influx of migrants. But as Redmond Shannon reports, EU leaders can't decide how to avoid a chaotic repeat of the 2015 Syrian refugee crisis.
And Canadian tennis star Leylah Fernandez advances at the U.S. Open after defeating another champion.
