VHS versus S-VHS (comparison using test cards)
This is a comparison of PAL video quality between the VHS standard and the S-VHS standard. I have recorded images of several test card types onto video tapes of both standards, and digitized them afterwards without using any significant filtering.
The differences lie mostly in the high frequency areas as would be expected. For some reason, the quality of the music recorded onto the VHS tape is very low quality, far lower than I had expected.
Hardware used:
Signal generator: IBM 300GL PC, with Windows 2000 and Viper II video card.
Video recorder: Panasonic NV-FS200, with Time Base Corrector (TBC) enabled
DVD recorder: Sony RDR-GX3
VHS video tape: BASF/EMTEC Professional High Grade (PHG) E-180, circa 15 years old, recorded circa 5 times
S-VHS video tape: Maxell Broadcast Quality (BQ) E-30, circa 10 years old, recorded 2 times
Test card images: (1) Telefunken FuBK, (2) Philips PM5544, (3) EBU color bars
