Vegetable Soup

This type soup was known as "Wash Day Soup" because housewives usually did the weeks laundry on Monday. This was before automatic washing machines when the wash was boiled in very large cast iron pots in the back yard over an open fire. It took all day to do the laundry and the lady of the house had no time to cook so she made a large pot of soup after breakfast and everyone ate soup for that day. I remember seeing these huge black pots with legs, filled with soap and water boiling and my grandmother using what looked like a rowboat oar to stir the laundry. The clothes were dipped from the wash pot to another large pot of boiling water for the rinse. We've come a long way since then. It's hard to imagine how hard things were back in my Grandmother's day. Thanks for watching.
