The Love Boat was based on a nonfiction novel written by Jeraldine Saunders. Saunders had an eclectic lifestyle, because, apart from working as an author, she also worked as a cruise director, model, astrologer, numerologist, and palm reader. She became the first woman to ever work as a full-time cruise director. Her crazy encounters with various passengers inspired her to write an anecdotal book titled Love Boats, which she published in 1974.

The novel was well-received, and it eventually inspired the show's creator, Wilford Lloyd Baumes. The Love Boat was undoubtedly Baume's crowning achievement, as the producer is only known for creating two other movies; Call Her Mom and Alexander: The Other Side of Dawn, neither of which were nearly as memorable or well-received as The Love Boat.

The Love Boat was incredibly popular while it aired. For its first seven seasons, it consistently ranked among the top 20 most popular television shows at the time, and was sometimes even ranked in the top 10. One season, which aired between 1980 and 1981, was so popular that it even reached the number 5 ranking.

Unfortunately, the final two seasons of The Love Boat grew less popular, and ratings dropped drastically. Finally, ABC knew it was time to let The Love Boat go, and after nine beloved seasons, it was finally cancelled. However, several made for TV movies, as well as several three-hour specials were all released even after the show ended. In September of 1983, The Love Boat became available for syndication, and people today still watch reruns for a burst of nostalgia.

While many popular television shows at the time focused on an ensemble cast, The Love Boat was a little different. There were only five recurring cast members, and only three of those cast members remained on the show through its entirety.
