The films starred Anjelica Huston, who was nominated for a Golden Globe for her performance as Morticia Addams, Raul Julia as Gomez Addams, Christina Ricci as Wednesday Addams, and Christopher Lloyd as Uncle Fester. But The Addams Family actually has a much older history. It originally began as a cartoon by Charles Addams in The New Yorker, which then became a fixture in American pop culture when it was adapted into a television show.

The 30-minute television series was created by David Levy and Donald Saltzman and shot in black-and-white. It aired for two seasons on ABC from September 18th, 1964, to April 8th, 1966, for a total of 64 episodes. The show is also notable for its opening theme, which was composed and sung by Vic Mizzy. The show follows a close-knit extended family with decidedly macabre interests and supernatural abilities, though no explanation for their powers is explicitly given in the series.

The wealthy, endlessly enthusiastic Gomez Addams is madly in love with his refined wife, Morticia. The Addams Family cast consisted of Carolyn Jones as Morticia Addams, John Astin as Gomez Addams, Jackie Coogan as Uncle Fester, Ted Cassidy as Lurch, and Lisa Loring as Wednesday Addams. While the series only lasted two seasons, several of the cast members moved on with successful careers, while others didn’t quite reach such heights. Escaping the ties of the eccentric Addams Family proved difficult for some of the actors, particularly Cassidy who was always looked at as the butler, Lurch.
