#COVID19 Gets Deadlier: Will Vaccines Work Against Mutated Coronavirus?

The SARS-CoV2 virus, like all other viruses, has been mutating. Studies suggest there have been 4,000 mutations so far. But the latest known mutation in the spike protein of the virus, which has come to light in the UK, is said to be the deadliest so far. The virus is believed to have become many times more transmissible – some scientists think the transmissibility has increased by 70 per cent. This could be the reason behind the sudden extraordinary spurt in #COVID19 infections in the UK. A similar mutation has been reported from other European countries and South Africa. Flights to and from Britain have been suspended to contain the spread of the mutant virus.

The Observer Research Foundation, which has been tracking the COVID19 pandemic, spoke to well-known scientist Dr Anand Ranganathan, Associate Professor at Special Centre for Molecular Medicine, JNU, to understand the implications of the deadly mutation of the Novel #Corona virus. In this discussion ORF Distinguished Fellow Kanchan Gupta and Dr Ranganathan focus on three issues: What does the reported mutation mean? How does it increase transmissibility? Will the vaccines that are now available still be effective in combating the Pandemic?
