More than three decades after Israel began developing the Arrow and 25 years since it was first deployed, the Israeli Air Force missile-defense system made a successful operational debut when it intercepted an Iran-made long-range ballistic missile fired at Israel by the Houthi militia in Yemen.

The IDF and Defense Ministry have revealed few details about the interception. The Air Force operates several Arrow 2 batteries that can hit missiles at high altitude and, according to foreign reports, can even target a missile that splits into several warheads. The interception of the missile fired from Yemen on Monday was apparently with an Arrow 2 Block-4 series and reportedly took place outside the earth’s atmosphere.

In 2017, the Arrow 2 had intercepted a Syrian S-200 surface-to-air missile fired at Israeli Air Force jets attacking targets in Syria. The Syrian missile missed its target and when radar showed its trajectory could end in a populated area inside Israel it was intercepted by the Arrow 2.

However, Monday’s incident was the first time that the Arrow 2 was used for its original purpose – intercepting a missile fired at Israel from a distant country. The missile fired from Yemen, reportedly a Qader missile – an upgraded version of the Iranian Shahab 3 – is of the type that the Arrow was originally designed to combat since development began after the Gulf War in 1991; then, after Israeli cities were hit by Iraqi Scud missiles that evaded the Patriot interceptors sent to Israel by the Bush administration, the Israeli Defense Ministry established the Homa ("Fortification") Organization to provide Israel with comprehensive missile defense systems.
