Iran’s Natanz and Fordow nuclear facilities are two of the most important sites in its nuclear program. For many years these facilities were built in secret, and their discovery caused major international concern about whether Iran was trying to develop nuclear weapons.

The Natanz nuclear facility is located in central Iran near the city of Natanz. It is Iran’s main uranium enrichment site. Uranium enrichment is the process of increasing the concentration of the uranium-235 isotope so that it can be used as fuel for nuclear power plants or, at higher levels, for nuclear weapons. Construction of the Natanz complex began in the late 1990s. In 2002, an Iranian opposition group revealed the existence of the site publicly. After this disclosure, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the United Nations’ nuclear watchdog, began inspections of the facility. Natanz contains large underground halls filled with thousands of centrifuges used to enrich uranium.

The Fordow nuclear facility is another uranium enrichment plant, but it is smaller and much more heavily protected. It is located near the city of Qom and built deep inside a mountain. Because of its underground location, it is difficult to destroy by airstrikes. Iran secretly constructed the facility and did not inform international authorities at first. In 2009, the United States, the United Kingdom, and France publicly revealed the existence of Fordow, accusing Iran of hiding the plant.

Both Natanz and Fordow became central issues in the international dispute over Iran’s nuclear program. Many countries suspected that Iran might use these facilities to produce highly enriched uranium for nuclear weapons, while Iran maintained that its program was only for peaceful purposes such as electricity generation and scientific research.
