STORYLINE:
Thousands of humpback whales congregate to breed in the warm waters of the Colombian Pacific between July and October.
The majestic creatures travel thousands of miles from Antarctica to give birth to their young.
The season of their migration is eagerly anticipated by locals in the Colombian town of Bahia Solano.
Around 10,000 people live in the harbor town in the Chocó region, about 405 kilometers (252 miles) northwest of Bogotá.
Their numbers are boosted during the whale season by hundreds of tourists who travel there to experience the magic.
The arrival of the marine mammals brings prosperity to the many residents who make their living from ecotourism.
Some take tourists out on whale-watching excursions, like captain Luis Hernando Hurtado Ruíz.
Others, like local craft maker Medardo Machuca, sell handmade souvenirs.
The Indigenous artisan has dedicated the last 20 years of his life to designing and making small wooden fish and whales.
He says he has sold pieces to tourists from all over the world, from the United States to Japan.
