Preserved Quarry Hunslets

The Hunslet Engine Company of Leeds started producing 0-4-0ST steam locomotives for the slate quarries of North Wales in 1870. Over 150 years later the little saddle tanks are still going strong, but rather than shunting slate around quarries are hauling passengers along scenic railways throughout England and Wales, and even further afield.

In this video we see 28 of the Quarry Hunslets in action both on passenger services and demonstration goods trains at the Bala Lake Railway, Beamish, Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways, Llanberis Lake Railway, National Slate Museum, Statfold Barn Railway, Threlkeld Quarry Railway & Mining Museum and West Lancashire Light Railway.

Preserved locomotives featured are Gwynedd, Winifred, Velinheli, King of the Scarlets, Elidir, Cloister, Lilla, Margaret, Jerry M, Jonathan, George B, Britomart, Holy War, Alice, Maid Marian, Irish Mail, Thomas Bach, Hugh Napier, Una, Sybil Mary, George Sholto, Gertrude, Edward Sholto, Dolbadarn and Michael. We also take a look at three new builds from the modern Hunslet Engine Company at Statfold Barn: Statfold, Jack Lane and currently under construction at Statfold Engineering Juliette.
