As labor approaches, a natural surge of stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol triggers a fundamental shift in the cells lining the fetal airways. Instead of actively secreting chloride and fluid into the lung cavities, these epithelial cells suddenly activate specific sodium channels. This cellular switch rapidly pumps sodium out of the air spaces and into the surrounding lung tissue.
