When the initial, localized stage of Lyme disease goes undetected and untreated, the Borrelia burgdorferi bacteria can disseminate widely throughout the bloodstream and infiltrate deep into the body's tissues. Because the classic "bullseye" rash does not appear in every patient, early symptoms like mild fever or muscle aches are frequently dismissed as a common viral infection. Without prompt antibiotic intervention, these spirochete bacteria excel at evading the host's immune response, burrowing into the joints, heart, and central nervous system where they can persist for months or even years, triggering a cascade of chronic, systemic inflammation. Once the infection establishes itself within the nervous system, a condition known as late-stage Lyme neuroborreliosis patients often develop a highly disruptive array of non-specific neurological symptoms. The chronic inflammation disrupts normal neural signaling and damages nerve fibers, manifesting as severe cognitive impairment often described as "brain fog," profound fatigue, memory loss, and shooting nerve pain or numbness in the extremities. Because these lingering neurological issues are entirely non-specific and closely mimic other chronic conditions like multiple sclerosis or fibromyalgia, achieving an accurate diagnosis at this late stage becomes incredibly difficult, leaving many patients struggling with debilitating symptoms without a clear resolution.
