The Vietnam War is usually told as a story of American intervention. Far less is said about the Soviet role in defeating it.

After Vietnam defeated French colonialism, the US intervened to preserve its influence and the rights of capital in the region. They deployed millions of soldiers, and over 3 million Vietnamese lives were taken. To counter the most advanced air war of its time, Vietnam needed far more than sympathy.

With the socialist bloc, the USSR sent 95 anti-aircraft missile systems, over 5,000 anti-aircraft guns, and radar. More than 500 aircraft, including 200 MiG-21 fighters were also sent. These weapons were crucial against the US bombing campaign.

Soviet aid was not just equipment. Around 10,000 Soviet military specialists served in Vietnam. They trained crews, assembled missile sites, repaired aircraft, and advised air-defence units. By 1965, Soviet advisers were already helping deploy the SA-2 air defence system that forced the US to change its bombing tactics. For example, it was a Soviet Officer, Yuri Trushyochkin, in charge of the SAM battery that shot down John McCain.

That is what socialist internationalism looked like: not words, but deeds. The USSR did not just denounce US aggression in Vietnam. It helped make it fail.
