This report was posted by Reuters earlier this week, and although it doesn’t go into very much detail, it states that this new revamp of the Model 3 should go into production in the third quarter of 2023 at two Tesla factories: Giga-Shanghai and Fremont California. It also says that this redesign will be inspired by the last year’s redesign of the Model S. Although Tesla is still the top electric vehicle company in the world, they are still trying to do what all publicly traded companies do: make more money. The main goal of Project Highland includes some changes to the Model 3’s exterior and powertrain performance, but its main focus is to reduce production costs and improve its appeal, given that it was unveiled almost seven years ago in early 2016. According to the unnamed sources who leaked this new project, it aims to optimize the profitability of the Model 3 by decreasing the number of components and complexity in the interior while focusing on features that Tesla owners value, such as the display. If you don’t count the globally recognized industry features that apply to all electric vehicles such as quick acceleration, no fossil fuels, and fewer moving parts then the Tesla Model 3’s most important physical differentiating feature from its competitors is certainly the center touchscreen display. Let’s briefly go over these removed features and how it relates to the new Model 3 redesign: the removal of all ultrasonic sensors and removal of radar in support of the new Tesla Vision which only relies on software and cameras, the removal of passenger seat lumbar support, the removal of the center console tray, the removal of the previously included mobile connector which is now an optional purchase at checkout, and the removal of the cool original glass roof that turned orange and purple when water droplets were on it. With the potential tax credit in 2023 that requires an electric sedan to be under $55,000 to qualify, now’s the time for Tesla to make an already minimalist Model 3 even more simplified with better profit margins. Some things that we can expect Tesla to modify on this new 2023 Model 3 include the removal of the stalks on either side of the steering wheel, which the Model S has already adopted. Although I don’t think the Model 3 will get the yoke steering wheel like the Model S has, the Model 3 could follow the Texas-built Model Y get the same structural battery pack design to drastically reduce the number of parts necessary to make the car. But there’s not a ton Tesla can take away from the Model 3 because some people already think it’s not premium enough compared to its gasoline competitors in the same price range such as the BMW 5 series and Mercedes E class. But I do think if Tesla can somehow implement this new Model 3 re-design in 2023 it would not only bring a fresh new desire to potential buyers but it would also bring the price down to possibly qualify for the tax credit, which would make it an even bigger hit than it is today.
