IMD Issues Nationwide Weather Alerts: Heavy Rainfall, Heatwave Conditions, and Monsoon Progress
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a comprehensive weather alert for multiple regions across the country, highlighting risks of heavy to very heavy rainfall, heatwave conditions, and the advance of the Southwest Monsoon during the period May 18–24, 2025.
West Coast and Peninsular India (May 18–24)
Karnataka, Konkan & Goa, and Kerala are expected to witness heavy to very heavy rainfall, with extremely heavy rainfall likely in Coastal Karnataka on May 20.
Thunderstorms and gusty winds (30–50 kmph) may accompany the rainfall in many areas.
Rainfall will extend to Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Lakshadweep, with intermittent very heavy spells over key zones including North Interior Karnataka and the ghats of Tamil Nadu.
Northeast India & Eastern Himalayas (Next 5–6 Days)
Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh, and Nagaland will experience widespread rains with very heavy rainfall likely between May 18–20.
Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim are also expected to receive heavy rainfall, particularly on May 18 and 20.
West and Central India
Konkan & Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, and Marathawada will see intermittent heavy to very heavy rainfall from May 18–24.
Strong thunder squalls (50–70 kmph) are forecast for the region around May 20–23.
Gujarat State may see rain activity increase from May 22 onwards.
