The Joplin tornado totally caught our storm chasing group by surprise. It was a freak tornado both in how the storm became tornadic and also how quickly the tornado intensified into an EF 5 strength wedge. This video was taken from the back of the third van of three that made up the storm chasing group.

The quality isn't great because I think the camera was having trouble knowing what to focus on. Also I believe the tornado itself was heavily rain wrapped which is why it's only really viewable as a dark shape in the distance.

None of us knew just how big or how awful this tornado was until we heard the various news reports after the fact.
