Living Colour Ignorance is Bliss Vernon Reid Guitar Solo with TAB

Living Colour was one of my favourite bands growing up. Everyone in the band was an absolute virtuoso on their instrument. The bands debut album Vivid imo is the bands greatest record but Time’s Up and Stain were also fantastic. Stain showed the band adapting to the angry 90’s era with heavier and more aggressive songs. Doug W imbish also replaced Muzz Skillings on bass which worked perfectly for this album.

Vernon Reid’s guitar playing is very difficult to copy. I remember attempting his solos when I was in high school and I always gave up. When I watch Vernon live his solos are not even remotely similar which makes me think he always improvises his solos. I sometimes make the Slayer solo comparison with some of Vernon’s solos because they oftentimes sound like a Jackson Pollock painting, where the notes don’t even matter, it’s more about the overall intensity of the phrases. The magic of Vernon is that he is obviously very musically educated, because his chaotic fast phrases are usually followed by very deliberate melodic lines that fit the song perfectly. Another comparison could be Robert Fripp. The greatest Avant Garde players are those that know the rules but decided to break them very deliberately.

Ignorance is Bliss is my favourite guitar solo off of Stain. I love the phrasing, and the use of the Whammy Pedal in the second half is flawless. I tried to get this solo as close as possible to the original. I much prefer Vernon’s version but I still enjoyed doing it and hopefully others can learn from this video and get inspired to listen to more Living Colour.
