Father sentenced for faking his own death, starting new life in Europe with woman he met online

Ryan Borgwardt was convicted of one misdemeanor count of obstruction for faking his own death on Green Lake in August 2024 and traveling to Europe to be with a woman he met online. Borgwardt, a married father of three from Wisconsin, pleaded no contest to the charge at a plea/sentencing hearing and apologized for his actions in a very brief statement. Although the joint sentencing recommendation between the state and the defense was 45 days in the county jail, the judge sentenced Borgwardt to 89 days. That matches the 89 days between when Borgwardt was declared missing to when the Green Lake County Sheriff's Office first made contact with him in Europe and realized he was still alive.
