Anon. (possibly J. P. Sweelinck): Paduana Lachrymae

This video was made for a series of online lectures during the first lockdown for piano teachers to present the various types of the harpsichord family and their tonal possibilities, differences.

The instrument in this video is a replica made by Werner Iten in 1987 of the Mother and Child Virginals dated 1623 by Johannes Ruckers. It is kept in Landesmuseum Württemberg, Stuttgart. A unique feature of this type of Muselar Virginals is that the bass strings are plucked in the middle whereas the treble strings are plucked close to the bridge. This results in a considerable difference in the composition of overtones between the treble, tenore and bass registers. The variety of colours between the ranges makes this instrument really suitable for polyphonic playing.

Played by Márton Borsányi. The video was made with cellphone.
