AWN Statewide Forecast for Sunday Morning, May 17, 2026
Bill Murray has your Alabama Weather Network statewide forecast for Sunday morning, May 17, 2026.
It's a pretty start to the day. The Regions SkyCam Network is showing partly cloudy skies and 66 atop Monte Sano in Huntsville, Birmingham 71 with a southeast wind already gusting to 23 mph, Montgomery 71, and Gulf Shores 72 along the ship channel with yellow flags flying for a low rip current risk. Some patchy fog is around south Alabama, especially across Butler and Conecuh-Escambia into Covington.
Today brings sunshine and mid to upper 80s statewide. Showers and storms develop over Georgia along the western fringe of the Bermuda High and stay mostly east of Alabama. The Storm Prediction Center has a marginal severe risk that just clips our eastern counties from Jackson and DeKalb down through Cleburne, Randolph, Chambers and slivers of Lee and Russell.
Monday warms again with a few spots flirting with 90 and an isolated shower or storm possible south of US 80. Tuesday turns hotter with heat index values pushing into the low to mid 90s as moisture levels climb.
Wednesday is when the pattern shifts. A cold front arrives, kicking off showers and thunderstorms that could be strong with plenty of instability available. Bulk shear stays limited so a widespread severe event isn't expected. The front stalls along the I-20 corridor Thursday, opening the door to additional rounds of showers and storms Friday, Saturday and right on through Sunday.
Rainfall outlook over the seven-day period: two inches or more north of US 278, an inch to an inch and a quarter down to the I-20 corridor, and lighter amounts the further south you go. We need every drop, especially down south.
