Meet Pacita Barsana Abad • (1946-2004), a Filipino-American textile and mixed media artist, whose work blurred the boundaries between painting, textiles, and global craft traditions
After leaving the Philippines in 1969 to study abroad, Pacita lived in and travelled across 60+ countries on six continents.

Wherever she went, she immersed herself deeply in local art and textile traditions - not as surface-level inspiration, but through lived exchange and collaboration across Asia, Africa, and Latin America.
She is best known for developing "trapunto painting" — a textile-based technique rooted in Italian quilting.
Instead of painting on canvas, Pacita stitched, padded, painted, and embellished unstretched canvases, transforming them into sculptural, tactile worlds of colour.

Pacita, colour was never just aesthetic - it was cultural, and political. When asked about her contribution to American art, she simply said:
"Color! I have given it color."

She was honestly such a badass and joyful human being. 😭☺️
