RV-10 Empennage Section 7-10 to 7-12

http://randomstringofwords.com/build-log/empennage-section-7-10-to-7-12/

Another section completed today. This was actually two days spanning just over 10 hours but I thought I would post them together.

Section 7-10 - Step 1 - Clean up the goop!
The first thing I had to do was clean up the leading edge. It took a little while but I found that paint thinner / brush cleaner worked really well. Once I got the bulk of that off I used an edge reamer and a drillbit to clean out the holes.

Section 7-10 - Step 2 through 7 - Rivet all the things!
The rest of this page was riveting all the various bits of the rudder together. Each piece is clearly marked and easy.

One piece of advice, don't rivet the hole on either side of the skin where the Spar meets the Counter balance rib. I did.. Woops.. Had to drill that out.

Also don't rivet the forward 3 holes like it says, it becomes very important later.

Section 7-11 - Step 1 - The trailing edge.
TAKE YOUR TIME! Riveting the trailing edge is actually easy, but go slow. Turn the pressure down on your rivet gun a lot and just go slowly. The shop heads will nicely smoosh down into the dimple and make a pretty convincing head on either side, though the shop head side wont be perfect. It's close, but not 100% like the other side. It's not supposed to be. If you try to make it so you'll just screw up your plane and go insane.

Section 7-11 - Step 2 - Bending aluminium
I found that using a piece of PVC pipe that I could match drill the rivet holes in and just cleco'ing to the PVC worked great for bending the aluminium. It's still actually tough to bend smoothly. Go slow. It's better to over bend slightly.

Once you have those bends in place, cleco and rivet using blind rivets. I added extra rivets to the middle part of the skin simple to make it smoother and have less gaps. If I had bent it a bit more I wouldn't have had to do this.

Section 7-11 - Step 3 & 4 - Counter balance weight
The #8 Screw it is talking about is AN509-8R14. There are several bolts that it sorta looks like, but that's the part number you actually need. You're welcome.

Try to keep the counter weight centered, there is a quarters thickness gap on either side of mine. I didn't want it to be shifted one way or the other. Its minor but it could play a factor.

Section 7-11 - Step 5 - Bend the skin
When you bend the skin make sure its a smooth bend across the whole width along the weight, but don't bend it too much. Just enough so as to be able to identify where the bend should be.

Section 7-11 - Step 6 - No really, bend the skin.. seriously
Once you have that precursor bend, you put a couple blocks on either side of the skin (tightly!) and make a 90° bend for real.

Make sure you do this right as you can't unbend it.

Section 7-12 - Step 1 - Whack-a-dimple!
Once you get everything centered and lined up on the counterweight you want to use a drill bit to make a dimple in the skin from the back side.

You use this to drill the hole, so make sure you have it all tight and in the center accordingly. There are lots of instructions on this step alone. Read them a couple times.

Section 7-12 - Step 2 - 5 - Finish up
The rest of these steps basically tell you how to assemble the weight and skin that you were just working with. It's pretty much common sense but they documented the heck out of it like champs.

The very last part basically is going back and riveting the various holes that you hadn't gotten to yet.
