NYO 2020: A Conversation with Wynton Marsalis
Acclaimed trumpeter, bandleader, and educator Wynton Marsalis participated in a virtual question and answer session with musicians from the 2020 season of NYO-USA, NYO2, and NYO Jazz.
Each summer, Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute (WMI) brings together the brightest young players from across the country to form the National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America (NYO-USA), a free program for all participants. Following a comprehensive audition process and a multi-week training residency with leading professional orchestra musicians, these remarkable teenagers embark on a tour to some of the great music capitals of the world while serving as dynamic music ambassadors.
In 2020, the national youth ensembles’ annual summer residency shifted to an all-digital programming format in light of the ongoing effects of COVID-19. From July 6 to 17, members of NYO-USA, NYO2, and NYO Jazz engaged in online training, mentorship, and performances led by principal players from top American orchestras, esteemed jazz artists, and NYO alumni. In addition to private lessons, studio sectionals, and master classes, they had the opportunity to make music together as part of an inspiring community of extraordinary musicians.
