Armament Breakdown: Tibiale and Ocrea - protection for the leg(s) #history #education #gladiator

The Tibiale and Ocrea are two pieces of legprotection for nearly every gladiator. Ocreae are mostly made of metal like iron or bronze while Tibialeae are made out of fabric. Combined they provide excellent protection for the lower part of the leg which is exposed depending on the height of the shield in use. Most gladiators wear one Tibiale and one Ocrea on their forward facing leg - for right handed Gladiators this would be the left leg. Combined with the Scutum and the Helmet it builds the line of defense. There are other classes like Thraex Type A and B and Scissor / Arbelas which wear them on both legs. Sometimes the padded tibiale goes up to the belly, these armaments are called "Cassalia" and sometimes they just conver the knee and everything below. Depending on century and style, this can varry.

My Tibiale is handmade by myself, it consists of many Centones spaced 3cm apart from each other and filled with sheeps wool. No machines were used in the making. The Corea is made out of bronze and is hand craftet by an italian smith. it's based on a finding of a Provocator Greave from Pompeii.
