People Shed More Weight When Offered Cash Incentives Over Text | “Need New Approaches For Obesity”
Talk’s Ian Collins is joined by Professor Pat Hoddinott, a lead on a trial at the University of Stirling that has found offering cash incentives to obese people in text messages could help them to lose more weight.
Researchers suggested this approach could be cheaper for the health service than traditional weight management programmes as it requires fewer staff.
Ian and Prof. Pat discuss the challenges of weight loss in men and how to incentivise them to lose weight.
The study, called Game of Stones, found that the group in the financial incentives lost 4.8% of their body weight on average, compared to 2.7% in the group who were sent the same messages with no financial incentives.
