Soap Photography Tips & Tricks + Creative Budget Friendly Ideas! | Vinland Apothecary

DISCLAIMER: I am not a professional photographer. I am very much a beginner and in no way am I saying that what I do is what everyone should do. I am just sharing my process for those of you looking for a place to start and inspiration.

When I first started seriously trying to photography my soap I had trouble finding any photography videos geared toward soap. So I saw a need to fill the gap with what I have learned thus far from other sources. This video should serve as a starting point on how to style your photography, useful props and equipment, a brief overview of my lighting set up, and a very basic introduction to photographing in natural light. I've included tips to save money if you're on a strict budget but still want to have a big impact with your photos! If you have any questions I didn't answer or if there is something I left out please leave a comment and I'll make more videos on this subject. I am thinking about one for editing photos, however, there are tons out there and everyone edits their photos differently, but we can talk about software if you like.

KET POINTS:
*Consider your theme ahead of time and keep it consistent throughout your presence online.
*Always take more photos than you think you need!
*Be aware of your surface and background.
*Be aware of your shadows.
*As mentioned in the video, plenty of props and other useful items can be found on the cheap if you look hard enough and keep an open mind. Don't be afraid to venture into second hand stores, you'll be amazed what you can find.
*Utilize the grocery store to your advantage to help convey your scent profile. Look for fresh herbs, fresh or dried fruit, even nuts and seeds.
*Find harder to find items, like marble cutting boards and cake stands, at outlet stores.
*If you're not ready to invest in a lighting set up, natural light is an amazing and absolutely free solution if you can find the right window. Make sure you have a bounce board to diffuse shadows, unless you're into the dark and moody lighting then, by all means, get dark on us girl! North or South facing windows are more diffused, East and West are harsher light.
*You do not need a high end camera, you can take great photos on your phone and there are all kinds of editing software programs available for free right on your phone!
