Life+in+a+Day SD

Asbury Park, New Jersey, October 7, 2010
A short film about life, corruption, riots, property, Bruce
Springsteen, beach life, and topless go-go bars!
Seen through the lives of Jeanette Bender and her son Dale, who own and ran the Phoenix Club on Cookman Avenue, which closed in 1997. Now they just look after the building and their rental property, while fighting officialdom.
During the 1950s it was known as the ''Gem of the Jersey Shore'', but Asbury Park lost its shine after the race riots of the late 1960s, struggling to recover as beachfront businesses were deserted and buildings left to decay.
A few bars remained around the famous boardwalk and convention centre, including the Stone Pony, where local boy turned rock legend Bruce Springsteen honed his craft in the early days of his career.
Now, some thirty years on, investment is returning to Asbury Park, with property developers and investors buying in, sometimes to the detriment of the residents and owners who have been here all along. Filmed over a couple of hours during the afternoon of October 7, 2010.
