Gray and Black Phosphate Plating of Hardware and Parts Part 2 of Plating Videos

This video goes through the steps involved to perform Black and Gray Phosphate Plating on fasteners.

To get a Gray Phosphate finish, you need to use a Zinc Parkerizing/Phosphate Concentrate. It takes very little to mix into a quart of water to provide excellent results. Brownell’s has a 1 pt. Zinc Parkerizing/Phosphate solution, part number 082-091-016WB. Palmetto Enterprises also has a Zinc Parkerizing/Phosphate solution.

To get Black Phosphate finish, if you add a small amount of cold gun bluing to your Gray Phosphate finish, it will provide a nice black finish. It is called gun bluing, but turns metal black. Brownell’s has their 44/40 Gun Blue, and Birchwood Casey’s Super Blue are a couple of options. I used Kleenbore Black Magic GB-2, but appears is no longer available. As I said, a little goes a long ways.

The Zinc Phosphate provides a porous, sparkly finish. If you look at it in the light, you can see the slight sparkles.

The thermometer is a pocket test thermometer available many places.
