The first step is to go out and pick out a tree. I picked a tree that was damaged and needed to come down anyway. The top was busted out of it. Making is a good choice for our whistle project. Let’s plan out how we are going to do this project step by step.

The next step is to cut the piece of wood to the correct length for our whistle. Then we drill a five eighths hole in the end of the piece of wood. This is the diameter of the wood dowel we purchased. You want a hole drilled in the wood the same diameter as the dowel you are going to use.

Step three is to cut the notch in the whistle stock. Cut straight down into the drilled hole a little way. Then cut a chunk of wood out at an angle. You want this cut as shallow as possible. Then smooth everything out and clean up all the cut edges.

Step four is to cut a piece of the dowel slightly longer than will be needed. Then flatten one side by trimming off some of the wood and sanding it smooth. Then slide it in the hole and test the whistle to find the best position for the dowel. Once you have this figured out to produce the best whistle sound glue the dowel in place using some wood glue.

Step five is customizing the whistle to make it look unique and nice. I carved DIY in the top of the whistle. After the glue dries cut off the extra dowel sticking out to produce a smooth end. And you are finished.
