JFK & The Cuban Crisis - 1962 | Movietone Moments | 7 Feb 20
On this day in 1962 US President JFK began the blockade of Cuba by banning all Cuban imports and exports. Here's a British Movietone report on the situation from a little later that year.
President Kennedy's urgency in launching his blockade underlined a determination to prevent - at almost any cost - Cuba's missile build-up. British experts now agree that these pictures show an extensive consolidation, and the President is in no doubt of its purpose. World reaction to the Russian build-up and the President's steps against it brought many appeals to reason and restraint. U Thant, acting Secretary General of the United Nations, appealed to Khrushchev and Kennedy for a truce pending negotiations. From North Wales, Lord Russell made his own appeal. Mr K's reply indicated his desire for a Summit Meeting.
Key scene. Bow on navy ship. CU sailor looking through gunsight. MS gun mounting swivels round. CU map. CU Kennedy - speech. CU map - Kennedy speaking. CU another map - Kennedy speaking (3 shots) missile firing. CU Kennedy speech. MS (2 shots) marines out of plane. CU marines (3 shots) marines. GV pan down UN building. MCU U Thant speaking (3 shots). GV mountains of North Wales. GV Lord Russell's house. MCU Lord Russell interviewed. MCU Lord Russell is handed a piece of paper (2 shots). Castro and Khrushchev.
