After a detailed android navigation app? DMD2 is now free!︱Cross Training Adventure
Two years ago we explored the free apps you could download and use on your phone for navigation. There are many options but generally Gaia and OsmAnd were seen as the best if you used the free basic versions. Welcome to Cross Training Adventure, we are into all things dual sport and adventure on the east coast of Australia. However, if you have an Android phone there is a GPS app that blows the others out of the water. DMD2. Developed by the guys at Thork Racing for use on their navigation devices, they have now made it freely available to everyone. The dashboard is customisable to include just the features you want. If you have a modern adventure motorbike with OBD2/TPMS integration, the dashboard can also display RPM, temperature, throttle position, battery voltage and tyre pressure. Second? You can use your phone as a roadbook. Have you seen the onboard maps used in Dakar? I only discovered it because my brand new AJP PR7 has this installed on the rally tablet. DMD2 was designed for adventure riders and has multiple features. Keen on adventure riding in Australia? Check out our vids. First? You can use it as a dashboard to simply show your speed. It's essentially that style of navigation but on your phone. Third? A normal navigation unit. Just watch the map. And if you import a GPX file, just follow the line. It supports turn-by-turn navigation as well. And you can even create a route on your phone screen. This is ridiculously comprehensive for a free app. If you like dual sport riding in Australia then you might like our adventure riding vids. There is an optional subscription for premium online services like Group Ride, satellite map layers, and live weather. Check out our reviews of various adventure bikes and dual sport bikes. You can choose between road or off-road modes. You can even choose between easy, medium and hard routes for off-road riding. You can also add multiple points, customize routes, and save them for offline navigation, which is optimized for adventure riding. Brilliant! So what are the drawbacks with DMD2? If all this sounds complicated, it isn't. The guys at Thork Racing have aimed for simplicity and big buttons for ease of use. You can also integrate DMD2 with handlebar controllers so you don't have to touch the screen while riding. When you install DMD2 it will download the relevant offline maps so you can navigate without an internet connection. I mentioned earlier that you can create routes directly on your phone's screen. Open the Map screen, long-press to create points, and use the route planner to set destinations. I couldn't find any. But I checked the reviews of experienced adventure riders who said the only possible issue is the navigation isn't as good in an urban environment compared to apps designed for road riders. But of course there's always Google maps and a pile of free options for road riders. So have the guys at Thork Racing made this comprehensive app free? I suspect it's partly because they are adventure riders and simply want to share it with others. But also they have created a range of premium navigation devices for adventure riders so I assume the app may get riders interested in serious navigation devices if their phones aren't sufficient. We have occasional detours to places like Vietnam, Cambodia, Romania and Canada. This is one of our three channels, there's also a Cross Training Trials channel, and a Cross Training Enduro channel. All three are equally dodgy. We are the 27th most watched dirt channel in Uzbekistan. We have won the polished turd award five years in a row. And we have a world record 25 class action lawsuits for inaccurate information. We think the whole motorbike scene is getting too commercial. So called dual sport riding reviews are just glossy ads nowdays. So the Cross Training Adventure focus is just get out there and have fun on two wheels. Instead of obsessing over the latest blinged out Beemer, which tyres to fit or spending a fortune on your suspension or billet alloy gas cap. So most of our adventure riding vids will feature the much loved bush pig, the Suzuki DR650. And we've done a 10 part series on how to unleash the mighty beast that lurks within. What else? Cross Training Adventure actively avoids sponsorship. We like doing seriously critical reviews. Or don't subscribe to our Cross Training Adventure riding channel. The main thing is get out and ride while you can with dual sport riding or Adventure riding in Australia, Canada, Vietnam, Romania and beyond! So check out Cross Training Adventure.
