How long it takes to get to that six pack level is a question I get asked daily, 365 days of the year from guys all around the world.
And it's no surprise this happens. Let's face it, having a six pack in this time and age means something.
It means you're taking care of your body, being on top of your health, and you've earned it through hard work, discipline and persistence.
Getting to that ripped lean physique is one of the biggest accomplishment a guy can have.
So how long does it take there?
Key points:
First off you need to do some math to determine your goal weight.
For that you can use the following equation:
Goal Weight = Current Lean Body Mass / (1-Goal Body Fat percentage as a decimal)
Example: 180 lbs male @ 16-17% body fat
Step 1: Figure out how much of that 180 lbs is lean mass.
So 16-17% of 180 is roughly 30 lbs. Now, you just subtract that fat mass from total mass.
180 lbs - 30 lbs = 150 lbs of Lean Body Mass
Going back into our formula:
Goal Weight = 150 / (1 - 0.10 (10% body fat))
Note: I choose 10% body fat because that's where most guys have a clearly visible six pack. So now we have:
Goal Weight = 150 / 0.90 = 166 lbs
That's the target weight. Meaning 180 - 166 lbs = 14 lbs is the amount of fat this person needs to lose to get to 10% body fat.
Now, most naturals will assume 14 lbs = 14 weeks of dieting losing 1 lbs of fat per week.
This is false, because you'll never lose just 100% body fat. There's other things involved in the weight loss.
Additionally your body will fight back, it will adjust, some weeks you'll lose less than that, you'll probably have a plateau or two. And you also will have diet breaks every 6-8 weeks.
So when we take all of that into consideration, the person from this example starting at 180 lbs @ 16-17% body fat will need to diet 22-28 weeks to reach a six pack @ 10% body fat.
Most guys will be shocked when they first realize this, but that's the reality.
Realistically if you predicted 12 weeks of dieting you'll probably need 18-20 weeks. That's how long it will take even if the math says it will take a lot less.
Mistake 1 - Guys think they're a lot leaner than they are at the start of the diet. A friend or someone online estimates you at 12% body fat and you're nowhere close.
Most guys are often delusional how much fat they need to lose.
And because of that they start dieting too late, too fat and they get bored / impatient and they start making mistakes. (cutting calories too much, adding tons of cardio)
Mistake 2 - People often think that they're just holding water, they just need to "dry out", it's the lighting etc...
This is where you need a reality check. You just more fat that you think. That's it.
The best thing in this situation is go do a proper DEXA scan which is gonna give you a more realistic figure.
Aside from using a body-weight scale to measure weight the mirror is your best tool for progress.
Another favorite tool I recommend is using raw caliper measurements and compare those week to week.
There's no error propagation since you're not using any formulas and you can see the trend.
And lastly it's a good idea to find a No-BS coach with experience to tell you the truth and help you figure out a nice timeline for the diet.
