I Used To Hate This Band, Now I LOVE Them | Professor of Rock

Our parents pretty much control the radio dial in the car when we're young, It worked out ok for me since my dad had great taste in music but there were a few artists he loved that I couldn't stand. How I leaned to truly appreciate one of those artists...

Keep the music alive!

I think Ive mentioned this before. My earliest memories of music were because of my Dad. He introduced me to the Beatles, Neil Diamond, Crosby Stills and Nash, and so many others.

This is how I once felt about Bread and David Gates. Go listen to Baby I'm a Want You with an open mind and tell me you don't love Bread. You won't be able to do it. Later that week I was driving to school and I was going through a rough patch with a girl I really liked and I was just kind of feeling down and my tape deck in my car wasn't working so I was flipping through the radio and wouldn't you know it breads soft rock classic Baby I'm a Want You came on the radio.

My mind was like, uh that's pretty good. By the time the 2nd bridge came around that David is singing in falsetto I was right there singing along with him. It was like that scene from Tommy boy when the Carpetners come on and Chris Farley and David Spade are pretending that they don't adore "Superstar" and by the end their singing to the top of their lungs. And that's all it took. I realized that with Bread, there was something there, and my Dad was right so I snuck his Bread CD and started listening to some of the other soft rock songs.

Within about an hour I was a true believer in the the mellow magic of Bread. The calming force of Bread's 70s soft rock music was a man-made wonder. All these years later I have discovered that Listening to a song by Bread is THEE best medicine to get rid of stress & anxiety.

After their self-titled debut album yielded no hits, the band went on a serious tear, with 4 consecutive Gold albums- not counting their 5 times platinum Best of Bread album in 1973. Between 1970 & 1973, they released 11 Top 40 hits.

A murderous recording & touring schedule, along with tensions between Gates & Griffin split up the band in 1973. Jimmy was an important contributor as a writer, and a vocalist on many of Bread's album tracks, but he was largely overshadowed by the genius of frontman David Gates.

The mortal blow for Bread's breakup in '73 was when all of the band's instruments & their entire sound equipment were stolen before they were set to play a sold-out concert in Salt Lake City.

Bread reunited in 1976 and had their last Top 10 hit together in 1977 when "Lost Without Your Love" peaked at #9 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Bread has a long list of songs that I love, but after much contemplation…here is my Bread 5er

#5- IF. With this song David Gates wrote a true pop standard. The song went to #4 and at the time was the shortest title to hit the top ten in the history of the charts until Prince took his song 7 to #7 in 1993. If is one of those timeless love songs that would be on a shortlist of the most used songs at weddings and it's been covered by everyone.

#4- Baby I'm-A Want You - A song David Gates initially attempted to compose on a piano, but after numerous attempts to finish the song, it just didn't sound right, so David segued to the guitar- then raised the song a whole key to get the sound he wanted. Those changes made the difference to turn "Baby I'm-A Want You" into a #2 smash hit that went Gold in 1971. This is the song that opened me up to bread. It's got one of the greatest bridges ever.

#3- 1972's Guitar Man- After Jimmy Griffin and David Gates took a shot at playing the guitar part on the song to no avail. Guitar Man is a song that any aging rocker can relate to, but the lyrics are also deeply relatable to the average listener, because it poignantly chronicles the natural course of life.

#2- Make it With You -Bread's one and only #1 song. It hit the top of the Billboard Hot 100 in 1970, and #5 in the U.K. David Gates sang lead, and harmony vocals, and played every instrument on the recording of the song except for the drums. From the beginning gorier strum, this song just puts you into a 70s soft rock trance.

#1- Everything I Own- a beautiful retrospective ballad David wrote in memory of his father. It rose to #5 on the Billboard Hot 100, #5 in Canada, and #3 on the U.S. Adult Contemporary chart.
Like many of Bread's most popular songs, "Everything I Own" is highlighted by David Gates wonderful falsetto, especially in the last verse of the song.

Ok whoo well thats' my Bread 5er. What is yours?
