I’ve been so fortunate to have had the opportunity to interview hundreds of musicians, and when I ask them what inspired their biggest hit, many of them respond that they don’t know where the song came from…It just seems to come out of nowhere.” In the case of “Layla” by Derek and the Dominos, a classic of the classics, the song was inspired by something tangible…. It was inspired by the ancient Persian parable titled Layla and Majnun, which means “mad man.” The parable is also referred to as “Layla’s Mad Lover."

Before Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, there was Layla and Majnun, a romantic tragedy written as a poem by Nizami Ganjavi, about a princess named “Layla” who was married to a man she didn’t love.” The book was an adaptation of an ancient Arab tale, The Story of Layla and Manjun. Although it was classic literature in parts of the Middle East, the book was not well known in the Western world. It was given to Clapton by his friend Ian Stewart Dallas after Clapton confided in his friend and told him about his intense obsession with a married woman.

Dallas felt Clapton’s plight sounded similar to the storyline of Layla and Majnun. Thinking that it could be cathartic, he gave his friend a copy of the book….and he was right. Clapton couldn’t believe how closely the story of Layla and Majnun mirrored his predicament. In the book, Layla and Qays fell deeply in love with each other when they were young, but when they became ‘of age,’ Layla’s father forbade her to be with Qays, and she was forced to marry a noble, even though she only wanted to be with Qays. In Clapton’s case, the situation may have been even more complicated because the woman that he had to have was not only married…she was married to his best friend. The object of Clapton’s desire was Patti Boyd Harrison, the wife of none other than George Harrison…yeah, “Guitar George” of The Beatles. Clapton & Boyd were having a torrid affair, but Boyd refused to leave Harrison.
