GISS Seminar, 2022-02-09: Simon Lee
Speaker: Simon Lee (Columbia Univ.)
Topic: Using regimes to understand North American weather and climate variability

Describing the large-scale anomalous flow configuration using recurrent weather regimes -- or perhaps less stringently, weather types -- has become commonplace for the Euro-Atlantic sector but is generally less common for the Pacific-North America sector. Regimes have the power to simplify a broad range of diagnostics (such as EOF indices) into a condensed set of objective patterns that are closer to describing the flow as a whole, with benefits to public forecast communication, extended-range prediction and associated decision-making. In this talk, I will review definitions of North American wintertime weather regimes, present some recent work on the modulation of these regimes to stratospheric variability, and discuss the regime evolution and forecasts during recent notable winter weather events -- including the February 2021 Texas cold wave and so far this winter.
