Three Salzedo Dances

From the Suite of Eight Dances by Carlos Salzedo. I. Siciliana. II. Seguidilla. III. Tango.

Each dance in the Suite is completely unique, each from a different place in the world, each with different moods. The three selections from the dance are all very different. A siciliana is a slow Italian dance in 6/8 or 12/8, first created during the Baroque period. It is usually in a minor key and evokes a pastoral mood. The Salzedo Siciliana is a modernized version of this dance. A seguidilla is Castilian folksong, and when referred to as a dance goes to the plural form—seguidillas. Seguidillas are usually major, in triple time, and often start on an off-beat. The Salzedo Seguidilla is no exception and follows all three requirements. A tango is an Argentinian dance in eight that originated in the 1880s. A tango has a very strict beat with a beautiful melody, and the dance is designed to show off the follower of the pair. Salzedo’s Tango includes a languorous melody with a repetitive, strict beat offered by the lower octaves of the harp.
