Free Western Movie Action in OKLAHOMA BADLANDS! Allan “Rocky” Lane! Yakima Canutt!

Republic Studios, the House of Action is where Allan Lane became a big star. Of course, his films were always loaded with fast-paced thrills, hard riding, and lots of well-staged confrontations, and OKLAHOMA BADLANDS lives up to the legend. Lane’s big break came when he replaced Wild Bill Elliott as Red Ryder. When that series ended, he was given the nickname “Rocky” and starred in a series of B westerns jam-packed with hard riding, fast shooting, and lots and lots of fights. Whether he’s Red Ryder or just plain “Rocky,” western fans really love the films of Allan Lane.
Our film today is 1947’s OKLAHOMA BADLANDS. It stars Rocky, sidekick Eddie Waller, and Republic stalwarts Roy Barcroft, Earle Hodgins, Jay Kirby (one of Hoppy’s old sidekicks), Terry Frost, House Peters Jr., top stuntman Dale Van Sickel, and Mildred Coles in the first of several Rocky Lane films. All that’s interesting, but second-billed above that stellar line-up is…Black Jack, Rocky’s stallion. Yep, the horse even had its own comic book.
To handle the production of this action-packed B western is none other than former silent movie leading man turned stuntman supreme, turned 2nd unit director, turned…director, the GREAT YAKIMA CANUTT. That’s right. Yak didn’t direct many films and it’s a shame because he sure knew how to keep things moving. I know you’ve seen the action he’s coordinated many times, from the B westerns of the 1930 and 40s he made with John Wayne and his Oscar-winning 2nd Unit direction in BEN-HUR, but this may be the first time you’ve seen him as the sole director. OKLAHOMA BADLANDS does showcase some terrific stunts, and I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.
