600 babies baptised in Georgia cathedral

(15 Nov 2016) Six hundred infants were baptised inside Tbilisi Trinity Cathedral on Tuesday, with Patriarch Ilia II of Georgia becoming godfather to all of them.
In an effort to help increase the birth rate in the small Caucasus nation, the patriarch came up with an initiative to baptise every third child born to an Orthodox Christian family, as well as every subsequent child thereafter.
Mass baptism began in 2008 and, to date, the patriarch is the godfather to 29,000 children.
The patriarch is considered the most influential person in Georgia, according to various polls.
