Intercalating Graphite (Sulfuric Acid intercalated graphite, Expanded Graphite, Graphene)

Because graphite is a bulk material and actually composed of millions of single atom thick sheets of carbon, it opens up new and interesting ways of modifying it's material properties. Using a process called intercalation it's possible to gentle force atoms and molecules in between the layers. These new compounds range from being supercondcutive, to semiconductive and some are even new states of matter called spin glasses. In this video we explore the first of these compounds and intercalate sulfuric acid. We then use our newly formed compound to produce expanded graphite and graphene.
