A billion-year-old information technology: Adam Marblestone at TEDxBeaconStreet
Evolution invented DNA as a way to store genetic blueprints, but technologists are now harnessing it to extend the idea of DNA as "information technology" in the realm of biology. Marblestone explains how understanding DNA as an information-based system has caused scientists to re-think basic principles of engineering and design. If we see DNA as a building component --like a Lego brick- or an information repository -like a barcode- we can use such analogies to think creatively about design in biotechnology.
Adam Marblestone, a Hertz Foundation Fellow in the Biophysics PhD program at Harvard, is pursuing technology development at the intersection of physical science, information science, and biology.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
