De Danann At The Embankment - Cooley's Hornpipe (1976)

Traditional Irish music group De Dannan from Galway play live at The Embankment.

Formed in 1975, the band are named after legendary Irish tribe Tuatha Dé Danann.

The line up includes Frankie Gavin, Alec Finn, Johnny Moynihan, Charlie Pigott and Johnny ‘Ringo’ McDonagh

De Dannan perform a hornpipe composed by Paddy O’Brien from Nenagh, County Tipperary. It was first heard being played by Joe Cooley from Peterswell in Galway and became known as ‘Joe Cooley’s Hornpipe’.

This episode of ‘At The Embankment’ was broadcast on 3 December 1976.

‘At The Embankment’ was a 12-week music series featuring well-known performers on the traditional Irish music scene, recorded at The Embankment pub in Tallaght, County Dublin. It ran from 1 October to 17 December 1976.
