During the Covid pandemic Mina and Giraldo created this choreographic 'game' on the basketball court in their neighbourhood. The piece takes the playful importance of rhythm and how it is expressed in the diverse sound polychromies present in the Milonga dance, taken more as a fun possibility and less as a rigid sequence of choreographic figures. The music used as inspiration for the piece is the famous ’Tango Negro’ by Juan Carlos Cáceres, a contemporary unorthodox artist whose vibrant legacy has won a place in the history of Tango.

Juan Carlos Cáceres (4 September 1936 - 5 April 2015) was an Argentine musician, expert in the music of the Río de la Plata, such as tango, milonga, murga and candombe. He was a pianist, vocalist and composer, his album Tocá Tangó was deeply influenced by his studies on the African origins of tango and its relationship with murga and candombe. It featured a non-traditional, fusion-oriented ensemble and the impressive candombe compositions "Tango Negro" and "Tocá Tangó".

He moulded tango music to his unique style, infusing it with rhythms of jazz, rock, European polka, classical and, above all, sounds indigenous to the African jungle. A revolutionary who introduced the sounds of African drums into jazz-tango firmly rooted in the belief that tango was not a "white music", but the product of the fusion of various cultures in which candombe was fundamental to the musical construction of the milonga.

The Ministry of Culture of Argentina published in 2018 the article 'The black origins of Tango', presenting data, images and musical productions of Afro-descendant artists that the 'Official History' has silenced for generations: "The African presence in the Argentine Republic, it is known, was invisibilised and silenced for centuries. White history, centred on Europe, was the one that populated school textbooks and official narratives. However, in the last two decades, the silenced history of Afro-Argentines from the colonial trunk (Argentines descended from those enslaved in this territory) began to emerge, revealing an undeniable presence that is part of our roots as a nation. So much so that even one of the symbols of Argentine identity, the tango, has negritude in its DNA. This is the black history of tango...".

Mina and Giraldo will be teaching Milonga traspié in Corrientes@Tufnell Park on Wednesdays June 7/14 & @Bromley June 8.
