DIY Picnic Table - The Perfect Project

A picnic table may be the ultimate project you can ever do. Especially in the Spring or Summer. What makes it the best project? The table can be as simple or as complex as you like. And there is a design that is within the abilities of every woodworker. From a traditional scissor legged table all the way through whatever you can imagine, with built ins.

I made a table with trestle style legs. I went this way so we could have something a little unique on the patio. This took a little longer to build, but it was very forgiving. No miter cuts. The most difficult cuts were the ones to round over the base and underside of the leg structures.

The 2x6 lumber came from one of the big box stores. The 2x4 lumber is all reclaimed.

I used pocket screws to attach the spreaders to the legs and 2.5" exterior deck screws to attach the top boards to the base. All holes were counter sunk and plugged with dowels. Tite-bond 3 waterproof glue was also widely used. The top was not glued down as it was pre-painted.

This table is 6 feet long and just over 30 inches tall. I broke that rule. A regular height table should be between 28 and 30 inches tall. It will comfortably seat six adults on benches and possibly two more at either end. However, that is a little more cozy.

I am very happy with how it turned out. It has the rugged, unique look I was going for.

If you are looking for a project to tackle, try a picnic table. There is plenty of inspiration on the web and you should be able to find something that will fit your abilities. Send a pic. I want to see what you do.
